Real workshop service work during regular car maintenance

Oil service

When to change engine oil and why not to delay it

Engine oil protects the engine, reduces wear and helps carry heat away. Extending the interval too much can increase wear and future repair costs.

Start with the service schedule for your engine

Check both the mileage and time requirement in the vehicle’s service information. Short trips and repeated cold starts can affect the appropriate maintenance plan; ask how the manufacturer’s guidance applies to your use. There is no single interval for every engine. A dashboard service reminder is useful, but it does not explain an unknown maintenance history.

Use the correct approval, not just the viscosity

Two oils labelled with the same viscosity can meet different specifications. Use the approval required for the engine and any relevant emissions equipment. If you do not know which oil was used last time, tell the workshop rather than choose a substitute by colour or brand.

Clarify what is being replaced

Ask whether the quote includes labour, the correct oil quantity and specification, the oil filter and any applicable seals. Cabin, air and fuel filters have their own requirements; they are not automatically included in every oil change. Our oil and filter service page explains the enquiry and labour starting price.

Two useful booking examples

Known history: “The last oil and filter change was in October last year; the car has covered about 9,000 km since then and mostly makes short trips.” Unknown history: “I bought the car recently and have no invoice confirming the last oil change.” Add the actual model, engine if known and current mileage; these are examples of useful information, not universal replacement intervals.

A warning is different from planned maintenance

A red oil-pressure warning, unusual mechanical noise or a significant leak needs a safe stop and advice before further driving. Do not assume that booking a routine oil change makes continued driving safe. The owner’s manual explains the warnings for the particular vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Is oil viscosity enough to choose the right product?

No. The engine manufacturer’s required specification or approval also matters.

Is the oil included in the published labour price?

The listed engine-oil-change starting price is for labour. Agree the oil, filter and total separately.

What if I have no service records?

Say so in your enquiry and send the car details and mileage. We can agree a sensible starting point rather than assume an undocumented service happened.

Discuss the next step

Send the make, model, year and the details relevant to your question. We will agree the scope, price and appointment with you.
