Separate evidence from assumptions
Bring invoices, a service book and any inspection report. Make clear which work is documented and which was only mentioned by the seller. An undocumented timing-belt change is not the same as a verified replacement. Remove the previous owner's unnecessary personal details from documents you share.
Agree priorities before authorising work
Start with reported safety concerns and the condition of brakes, tyres, steering and suspension. Next, compare documented maintenance with the schedule for the actual vehicle. Oil specification, fluid requirements and timing-drive maintenance depend on the engine and manufacturer; one universal kilometre interval would be misleading.
What diagnostics can and cannot establish
Reading stored fault codes may help investigate a symptom, but it is not a complete vehicle inspection. It does not prove the mileage, accident history or that every component is sound. Tell the workshop if you need a wider condition check so that expectations and scope are clear.
A useful first message
Write the model, year, engine if known and approximate mileage. Then list documented work, missing records and anything that happens while starting, braking or driving. For example: “I bought this car recently. I have an oil-service invoice, but no timing-drive record. Starting has become slower.” These are prompts, not a diagnosis.
Costs and follow-up
Ask for a proposed first stage, what it includes and how additional findings will be approved. Parts and labour depend on the car and condition found. If the car has unstable handling, poor brakes, a red warning or overheating, call before attempting to drive it in.
Discuss the next step
