Engine starts then stalls: what to record before diagnosis

The starter turns the engine, it actually fires and then stops by itself. That sequence differs from cranking without starting. Describe what happened and arrange safe assessment rather than holding the throttle open to attempt a journey.

Does it start, then immediately stall?

Distinguish an engine that turns over without starting, one that runs roughly, and one that starts then cuts out. Say whether it stops while stationary or as you move off. Normal stop-start operation and accidentally stalling a manual car are different situations. Describe the sequence you have already noticed; there is no need to restart the engine just to time it.

When does it happen?

Mention whether the engine is cold, warm after a short stop, or has been unused for several days. Include recent refuelling, battery replacement or repairs without assuming that the last event caused the fault. Note any key symbol, warning light or display message.

Several systems can cause a similar symptom

Depending on the engine, fuel delivery, air, ignition, electrical supply or engine control may need checking. A symptom or fault code does not by itself prove that a pump or sensor needs replacing. For difficult starting without a brief period of running, see the starting-problems guide. For uneven running that continues, see rough or fluctuating idle.

When to stop further attempts

Do not enter traffic with repeated unexpected stalling or try to keep the engine running with high revs so you can complete a journey. Stop further attempts for fuel smell, leakage, smoke or unusual mechanical noise. If the engine cuts out while driving, prioritise a safe stop and arrange suitable assistance. Do not investigate the engine in a traffic lane or run it in an enclosed garage.

Preserve useful information for the check

Send the make, model, year, fuel type and the start–run–stop sequence. Mention previous reports and where the car is safely parked. Avoid clearing fault codes, disconnecting components or bypassing security systems. Agree the initial diagnostic investigation before approving parts or repair; a code-reading starting price is not a total repair quote.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive if the engine stays running with more throttle?

That does not establish that the cause is resolved. Do not attempt a journey that way with repeated unexpected stalling; arrange a safe next step.

Does this rule out a battery or charging problem?

No. The sequence helps describe the issue but does not exclude electrical or other causes without assessment.
