Record the actual amount added
Follow the manufacturer's procedure for checking oil level, including the required engine conditions and waiting period. Note mileage, date, reading and the volume actually poured in. A bottle's capacity is not the amount used if only part was added. Keep the oil specification in the record and avoid overfilling.
A dry parking spot does not settle the cause
Oil can be lost externally without forming an obvious puddle. Consumption through the engine may involve crankcase ventilation, seals, rings or a turbocharger where fitted, but none should be diagnosed from top-ups alone. Tell the workshop about smoke, smells, a change after servicing and previous repairs.
There is no universal acceptable figure
Do not apply a single internet limit to every engine. The manufacturer's information and a measured change in the individual car's behaviour are important. A newly increased need for top-ups warrants attention even if someone else reports using more oil in a different car.
Level and pressure warnings are not interchangeable
A red oil-pressure warning requires stopping safely and switching the engine off, even if the dipstick level appears normal. Do not repeatedly restart to check whether it disappears. Significant smoke, rapid loss or serious engine noise also needs prompt professional advice rather than continued driving.
Avoid a blind switch to thicker oil
Use the correct approved specification rather than an additive or a thicker oil as a guessed cure. Agree an investigation based on the record and symptoms. Fault-code reading alone may not answer a mechanical oil-consumption question, and the repair cost cannot be established without the cause.
